Never one to be shut up by anyone, Egyptian-British imam Abu Hamza al-Masri gloats about the Space Shuttle after being kicked out of the mosque he preached from.
Hollywood couldn't come up with a more caricatured Muslim if an
Oscar depended on it. Abu Hamza al-Masri, the radical cleric and
bin Laden supporter ousted from the mosque he called home for years,
turned up his rhetoric a notch by gloating over the Columbia disaster as he took his flock to the sidewalk. Ü"It was a
trinity of evil against Muslims, because [the shuttle] contained Americans, an Israeli and a Hindu," he said. "This was a
divine act, a message for mankind." (One wonders what "message" he sees in the sad state of the Muslim world these days.) Mainstream Muslim leaders
quickly denounced the cleric's "publicity seeking antics" as "grossly offensive." The
mosque's trustees, who waited for the goverment to act against the imam even though they also opposed his teachings, said that the mosque (which was closed after an anti-terrorism raid last month) will remain shuttered until it can be cleansed of al-Masri's "
spiritual filth."
