Media appearances and analysis featuring altmuslim editors
Why the silence? - "Both reactionary religion and militant secularism are on the rise, with both displaying a rigid certainty and a desire for power that will do nothing to benefit society. In this context, it is vital that people with open-minded faith speak up and demonstrate alternatives. [altmuslim.com has] set many good examples in this regard." (January 8, 2008)
Does the US tolerate anti-Muslim speech? - "You see more hostility towards Muslims now than you did the year after 9/11," says Shahed Amanullah, editor of a Muslim web-zine, AltMuslim.com. He and other observers point to America's failure to capture Osama bin Laden, the continuing difficulties in Iraq and Afghanistan, and news of terrorist plots overseas as reasons why many Americans feel hostile towards Muslims. (December 7, 2007)
In the great Berkeley free speech tradition - [Amanullah] claims no personal agenda other than concerned dad. “I want my children to grow up in a country where they, as Muslims, feel valued,” he says, “and where their religion doesn’t contradict their nationality.” (November 9, 2007)
Shaping the debate on Muslims - The publication [altmuslim.com] promotes critical analysis, discussion, and debate within the Muslim community in the West while also showcasing commentary for non-Muslims who want a sense of the dialogue going on among Western Muslims. (October 19, 2007)
Blogging Where Speech Isn’t Free (.mp3) - Many nations have no tradition of free speech, and in those contexts, blogging can be extremely dangerous. Concepts of God
God is the king
Part of our rights as citizens of this blessed country is the pledge to defend and follow the Law of the land. It is not right that we pledge to uphold the law and then betray that pledge.
By Hesham Hassaballa, October 22, 2006

God is The King, Al Malik. He is the King of Kings, the Lord of all Lords, the Master of the Universe. He is the source of all power and dominion, and He gives and takes it away as He pleases:
Say: "O God, Lord of all dominion! You grant dominion unto whom You will and take away dominion from whom You will; and You exalt whom You will and abase whom You will. In Your hand is all good. Verily, You have the power to do anything." (3:26)
As Jesus taught his disciples to pray: "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10). There is nothing that transpires about which God has neither the knowledge thereof nor the power to influence. No matter what power human beings may have over one another, it is nothing against the power of God. No matter how much influence one may have over events on the earth, it is no match for the dominion of God.
It should serve as a reminder for those who think they can rule and run the world for their own agenda. Those who think they can start wars of terrible destruction and think they will not be held accountable. Those who think they can shape and mold an unsuspecting and unquestioning public into supporting an agenda that is detrimental and destructive. Those who think that the morality of power is more important than the power of morality.
It should also serve as a reminder for those who commit terrible acts of inhuman violence in the name of the King. They think that they are doing good; nay, they do a terrible evil, and we can see through their guise of piety. They wrap their evil ugliness in the cloaks of the truth of the King's Word. Yet, their vision will not prevail. Over them watches the King, and He will deal with their evil.
They must always remember that God is the King. His will be done always. Remember the encounter of King Nimrod with our father and master Abraham (peace be upon him). The Lord recounts the discussion:
Are thou not aware of that [king] who argued with Abraham about his Sustainer, [simply] because God had granted him kingship? Lo! Abraham said: "My Sustainer is He who grants life and deals death." [The king] replied: "I [too] grant life and deal death!" Said Abraham: "Verily, God causes the sun to rise in the east; cause it, then, to rise in the west!" Thereupon he who was bent on denying the truth remained dumbfounded: for God does not guide people who [deliberately] do wrong. (2:258)
The king could not respond to Abraham's very simple truth about the True King. In fact, using the alternate meaning of kufr in this verse, the last part can also be translated: "Thereupon he who was ungrateful to God remained dumbfounded." Nimrod was ungrateful to God by thinking himself to be like unto the King: tradition relates that when Abraham said that God gives and takes away life, the King brought two men, killing one and sparing the other. But, he is not like the King. He is not like the King.
Sooner or later, all will understand Who is the real King:
...the Day when they shall come forth [from death], with nothing of themselves hidden from God. With whom will sovereignty rest on that Day? With God, the One who holds absolute sway over all that exists! (40:16)
Yet, on that day, it will be too late. What good is knowing that our Lord is the only King worthy of serving when we meet Him face to face? What good is realizing for the first time that He is the Ultimate Truth on the Last Day? What good is owning up to your heedlessness then? The time is now, here and now, on this earth to make that important realization. We have to understand this now and have that understanding be reflected in our actions.
When we know that He is the King, then how dare we wilfully disobey Him? If we know that He is the King, how can we simply go about with our lives thinking that He does not see? If we know that He is the King, how dare we live in His Kingdom and disobey His law? Part and parcel of our rights as citizens of this blessed country is the pledge to defend and follow the Law of the land. It is not right that we pledge to uphold the law and then betray that pledge. That is the sign of an unfaithful citizen.
Well, we all live in the Kingdom of the Lord God on High. There is not a place in this universe that does not belong to Him. And He is the King of it all. Thus, how could we dare wilfully disobey Him in His Kingdom? What sort of citizen would we be? How could we dare to spread death, destruction, and corruption on this earth? How could we, when He is our King?
Thus, those who think they have the power to do anything they want without any accountability should well remember that over them rules the King. He is watching. His is the ultimate sovereignty. He is possessor of all dominion and power. His will ultimately is done, as He says in the Sacred Scripture: For God always prevails in whatever be His purpose: but most people know it not (12:21).
Most people know it not. Yet, there is an opportunity for us to be among that small minority: to be among those who always keep in mind that God is the King, and let that understanding be reflected in our actions. And when we start to despair over the terrible destruction caused by the godless in this world (even among those who claim to surrender themselves to Him), let us always remember:
Let it not deceive thee that those who are bent on denying the truth (or those who are ungrateful) seem to be able to do as they please on earth: it is [but] a brief enjoyment, with hell thereafter as their goal - and how vile a resting place! (3:196-197)
All praise is due to the King, Lord of all the worlds. Amen.

I come to this site for the interesting social discourse. As I'm not religious myself, I can't really appreciate the blind faith in this piece. It reminds me of some passages from Layard's travelogue/journal "Remains of Ninevah". One of the tribesmen he hired to work as an excavator spoke about Nimrod, whom 19th century Iraqis attributed ancient ruins to. The tribesman gave a speech to his fellow workers on the importance of believing in the true God, and that they couldn't question His decision to make the infidels more powerful than themselves at this point in history, but if they stay faithful they will eventually persevere. With all due respect to Dr. Hassaballa, and I understand Eid just passed and was probably what inspired his writing, I think more rationality and less blind faith would better serve the Muslim community.

I am inclined to agree with the comment above. I struggled to get through this article as well and part of it made me cringe. Thats not b/c I disagreed with the content--much of it I concur with. But I think the tone is often very condescending and lacking in any analysis. For example, this line, "nay, they do a terrible evil, and we can see through their guise of piety."
I am not quite sure what an article like this is doing on altmuslim. Its more of a khutba than thoughtful analysis. I think articles like this are oft-putting, not only to non-Muslims who visit altmuslim but also to Muslims who are often accustomed to hearing this type of discourse and followed by the implicit assumption that we accept these beliefs without question. While I realize that the good Dr. is not saying this, I could not help but be reminded of going to a close minded madrassah when reading this where the teacher would say, in words much like Dr. Hassaballa here, "those who think they have the power to do anything they want without any accountability should well remember that over them rules the King." Reading Dr. Hassaballa's words are a chilling reminder of those dogmatic madrassa classes.

Dr. Hassaballa,
one other thought. i think many of your articles are highly illuminating and very powerful. I think you bring a unique perspective on a lot of matters, esp the word of science of which you are an expert. I would love to see you flex more of your science muscles in this altmuslim space. For example, Slate just a great article exploring if TV causes autism. I don't have the science aptitude to write abt this but I think someone like you could shed an interesting perspective on this. (for the article, see here: http://www.slate.com/id/2151538/)
This is not to say that I think you should only write abt science b/c you are a doctor. But before I sit down and write stuff for altmuslim, I always ask myself what unique perspective do I offer to this forum? Its that reason that I have a folder of unpublished atlmuslim pieces, not b/c they are not well written or though out, but b/c I feel like they do not add something new to this forum or more imp, employ a style that may be better for a blog or a talk than an article.
again I say this all as an admirer of much of your work and as a fellow altmuslim writer/fan. i hope and pray to Allah that we will both continue to contribute to this venue and that in the spirit of critical thought, we will both prod each other on to write better and better articles.

Hi,
No Allah without being faithful to Ilah. Adam is the Head of Ilahs and that is why people face Kabah, the Temple of Adam but still people are unfaithful to their Ilahs? It is the Ilah who render protection and every one who disowns his Ilah would be killed by his roots or supporters. That is happened during the Partition of India, is happening in Iraq and will happen in future. For Peace become faithful to your tribal Ilahs otherwise Allah does not want to know you but the Satan.
Here is an article that supports my views:-
PARTITION OF INDIA
I was 14 years old when the Partition of India took place and my parents were on the Pakistan side before moving to India side. My father was in education department and he knew the subject of religion. He stopped many attacks and enmities based upon religious selves. It was the hypocrisies of the British and the Indian leaders that caused the division and bloodshed.
We Indians of the farming tribes served the British Army faithfully but the British colluded with the people of business tribes and hypocritically divided our homeland leading us into the sectarian riots and bloodshed that could be avoided.
India is the land of many tribes and she is our motherland. We lived together peacefully and supported the British in the two world wars. Jatts, Pathans, Marhatta, are a few marshal tribes worth mentioning. Now, our tribal homelands are divided on sectarian basis and when we fight with each other, the West shopkeepers sell their arms into our poverty and misery. For example, the Punjab, Rajasthan, U.P., etc are the homes of the people of Jatt tribe, one of the best soldiers in the British Army and now we are ready to fight against each other under the sectarian banners of Sikh, Hindu and Muslim.
Religion brings in peace but when the sons of Satan, the hypocrites lead the masses, and then it leads people to the bloodiest of all wars. If you remember that Jesus condemned hypocrisy the most as it originates from one’s heart than the moral sins, then you would understand the fruit of evil spirit or hypocrisy that became prevalent during the partition of India.
British were supposed to be the staunch supporters of democracy and they always send their representatives all over the world to see that the elections are fair and the flag of democracy is upheld.
But the British handed over the reigns of our country to the Congress Party dominated by the business tribes, Baniya, Khatri, Bhatia, etc. of India under the banner of Hindus and to the Muslim League also dominated by the counterpart business tribes, Sheikh, Bhatia, Arian, etc. under the banner of Muslims. Lala Mohandass Karamchand Gandhi, a Baniya by tribe represented the business tribes on one side and Lala Mohammad Ali Jinnah, a Babla Bhatia, the business tribes on the other side. There was a third person in the name of Lala Tara Singh Malhotra Khatri who came under the banner of Sikhs.
All such people were the representatives of their political organisations and none of them represented the general public as it is done in the democratically held elections. In other words, the British did not hold General Elections to pass on the powers to the democratically elected members of the Parliament but to their well-groomed stooges to create chaos and bloodshed in the country through sectarian riots. The British supported their stooges financially and unduly favoured the heads of different religious sects, so as to support the sectarian divisions among the people.
In a nutshell, the British encouraged the sectarian leaders to create chaos so that they could apply their “Divide and Rule” Policy to hold on to their Indian Empire. The clever business tribal people, who fought least during the Wars, benefited most from their policy whilst the simpleton village tribal people who fought bravely during the wars suffered the greatest of all. In fact, the British like the clever shopkeepers treated the sincere village people like the X-mass pets deserting them into the hands of clever shopkeepers of India to let us suffer.
But every cloud has a silver lining. The demarcation of India, especially of the Punjab is right between the two great towns, Amritsar, where this holiest of Holy Temple Harmandir Sahib is present and Lahore, the capital of the Punjab where the crooks of the highest calibre live. Remember that the Holiest of Holy Temple, which used to be in Jerusalem and destroyed in 70 A.D., is the Hospital for the spiritually sick dishonest people for cleansing their hearts with His Word. Harmandir became corrupt when the Owner of this House, Satguru (Christ) Tegh Bahadur Ji visited the Place but He was refused the entry into it and He was turned away. Satguru Tegh Bahadur Ji rightly cursed the town of Amritsar by Saying: -
“AMRITSARIYAE ANDAR SARRIYAE”
That is the people of Amritsar are dirty-hearted people and this is apparent by the corrupt practices run at this Temple that are worst than those run at Jerusalem Temple. What God has to do with gold? Thus, we have dirty-hearted people on the both sides of the border and their destruction is inevitable. Destruction of the other towns would follow the general pattern, more dishonest people more the destruction.
Kashmir used to be the land of the most learned Brahmins nicknamed as “Guru Brahmins”, who in this Dark Age become Guru sons of Satan. No wonder the Sarsuts and Khatris of Kashmir on becoming Mohammedans committed the greatest of all heinous atrocities that Satguru Tegh Bahadur Ji had to lay his sacrifice to these satanic people. So, the British left Kashmir as the Bone of Contention between India and Pakistan so that both of them could tear Kashmir apart.
Remember that the Mullahs from Kashmir went all over the Middle East, Russia and Europe to create havoc among the people. Allah being Spirit, there are neither the beautiful girls, HOORIS nor any heaven up there but rather you enjoy Peace of Mind in Allah. Further, He is free of any moral laws or SHARIAH Laws and if someone binds you in the name of God or Allah, then he is a son of Satan. That is, Islam of Allah is SHARIAH-FREE.
So, the British hypocritically divided our Motherland and that hypocrisy would definitely bear fruit as the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not forgiven.
Time of bearing this Fruit could not be assigned definitely but the year 2012 could be the possible time for the fierce fighting between the two countries.
The Punjab is the homeland of the most foolish people of Jatt tribe, whom our tribal elders characterised in sayings such as: -
JAATRRA SAE KAATRRA APNA HI GHAR GHALAE SAE.
People of Jatt tribe are in nature like the male buffaloes, which like fighting with each other. This would happen during the Indo-Pak war when the foolish Jatts from both sides would kill each other. Jatts are also well known for their generosity too.
Another saying: -
KOKARR (Chicken) KAN (Crows) KAMBO (A tribe) KABILA PAALDAE (Look after their young ones);
JATT MAEHAN (Jatt like the male buffalo) SANSAAR (Worldwide) KABILA GHAALDAE (Destroy each other).
